Our Team

The Crisis Informatics Lab is led by Amanda L. Hughes, an Assistant Professor in BYU's Information Technology & Cybersecurity Program. The lab focuses on studying, designing, and building technology for how social media is used in times of crisis and disaster.

Professor Amanda Lee Hughes
Amanda L. Hughes is an Assistant Professor of Information Technology in Brigham Young University's School of Technology. As a recognized research leader in the area of Crisis Informatics, her work investigates the use of social media during crises and mass emergencies. She studies, designs, implements, and deploys software systems that improve crisis communications based on deep understandings of the social context in which they reside.

David is a master student from the school of technology studying twitter discourse related to crisis informatics. He likes solving data science problems and is interested in the fields of machine learning and natural language processing. He is currently employed as a software engineer in the financial sector. His hobbies include running and cycling.

Angela is a Sophomore studying in the Information Technology program. She is from Tirana, Albania. Her field is in cloud computing, data security and some of her passions include foreign languages, volleyball and literature books.

Spencer is in the Cybersecurity program, with specific research interests in cyber architecture and automated attack response. Outside his studies and projects, he also competes competitively in various esports, enjoys cooking and baking, is learning to shoot (accurately) a hunting crossbow.

Andrew is a Junior majoring in Information Technology. He was born in Washington, grew up in Bakersfield, California, and served his Mission in Portugal. His fields of interest are UXD, IoT, Machine Learning, and Web Development, and some of his hobbies include Soccer, Tennis, Dance, and playing the piano.
